HOW IT WORKS

How does buying an oak frame from us work?

How buying an oak frame from us works, from your first message to the frame going up.

THREE WAYS TO BUY

What are the ways to buy?

Three ways, depending on how much of the building you'd like us to do.

If you already have an architect or a main contractor, we come in as the oak frame specialist and work to their drawings. There's more on the For architects page.

Way 1

Design and build

We design it, make it and put it up, and do the base, the roof and the finishing around it. It's how we prefer to work near home.

Where

Within 90 minutes of Abergavenny

Way 2

Supply and install

We make the frame and raise it on your site. Your own builder does the base, the roof covering and the rest.

Where
Within 2.5 hours of Abergavenny; nationwide, case by case
Way 3

Supply only

We make the frame and supply it cut and numbered, with assembly drawings, for you or your builder to put up.

WHO DOES WHAT

Who does what?

What's ours and what's your builder's depends on which way you buy. Here it is for every building we make, in the order people ask. The same tables are on each product page.

THE PROCESS

What happens after I get in touch?

Step by step, from your first message to the frame going up on site, and what you pay along the way.

01

Your enquiry

Tell us what you're planning, with photographs of where it's going if you can. We'll reply by the end of the next working day.

02

A phone or video call

Before any design visit. We go through your photographs, how much you'd like us to do, your budget and your timing, so we both know whether a visit is worth it.

03

A design visit

About an hour: photographs, a 3D scan, then the design worked up at your table.

Find out more about the design visit ↓
04

The design

We draw the frame and agree it with you.

05

The price

We price to the design and tell you what any change does to the cost.

06

The workshop

The routine cuts are machined at our sawmill from our own files. Our carpenters cut the complex joints, then assemble and peg every frame at our workshop near Abergavenny.

07

On site

We raise the frame, and on a design-and-build job we finish the building around it.

DESIGN VISIT

What happens at a design visit?

The design visit comes after the phone or video call, once we both know a visit is worth it.

What happens on the day?

  • About an hour at your house.
  • We take photographs and a 3D scan of where the building will go.
  • Then we work the design up with you at your table. On a porch, that can be the design done.

What happens afterwards?

  • On an extension, garage or house the design takes longer, and it's the part most worth not rushing.
  • We model the frame in 3D. You see it develop, and you get a copy to look round yourself.
  • Two rounds of changes are included.
  • If it needs planning, our architect draws and submits it. On design and build that's in our price; the council's fees aren't.
  • You sign the final drawings, and nothing is cut until you do.

What does it cost?

  • No chargewithin 90 minutes of Abergavenny.
  • £300 including VATfurther afield (£250 plus VAT), taken off the price if the job goes ahead.
  • The first quotation is free.

PAYMENTS

When do I pay?

Within 90 minutes of Abergavenny, nothing is paid until you accept a quotation. After that, each payment is tied to a stage you can see, and the largest buys the oak, ordered and cut weeks before it reaches you.

Porches and garden structures

  1. 10%on signing
  2. 40%three weeks before the workshop
  3. 40%when the frame is installed
  4. 10%on completion

Everything else

  1. 10%on acceptance
  2. 40%at workshop start
  3. 30%when the frame is standing
  4. 10%when the roof is watertight
  5. 10%on completion

Supply only

  1. 25%on order
  2. 75%ten days before dispatch

The first two columns apply whether we design and build or supply and install.

LEAD TIMES

How long will it take?

Most of the wait is before we cut anything. The lead time runs from the day you order and covers design sign-off, engineering where your job needs it, and the frame's turn in the workshop. On most jobs the frame itself goes up in days. What comes after depends on how much of the building we're doing for you.

Lead time is the wait from receiving your deposit to the start of work. Time on site comes on top of it. For design and build it covers all trades, start to finish; the frame itself is usually up in a few days. With supply only, we aren't on site. Planning permission, where you need it, is on top of both and is decided by the council.

Typical figures, correct at October 2026. Every job is different, and your quotation gives the dates for yours.

An oak frame newly raised on a terrace at Devauden

Are we the right fit for you and your project?

We'd love to be the right fit for you. There's always a chance we won't be, and if that's the case, that's a perfectly good outcome too. Better to know now than after a design visit.

A good fit

We're likely to suit you if

  • You want an oak frame that will be lived with and looked at.One that sits well with your house and its setting, seen from the garden or the road.
  • The quality of the oak matters to you.Sap-free green oak, planed and chamfered, with every joint draw-pegged. That's our standard, not an upgrade.
  • You'd like one clear price from the start.Itemised, the highest the job should come to, and we'll tell you what any change does to it.
  • You're within reach of Abergavenny. We design and build within 90 minutes, and supply and install within two and a half hours. Anywhere else in the UK, we can supply the frame cut and numbered, or install it case by case.
  • You can plan a few weeks ahead. We work through a booked order, so starts are booked in advance.

Perhaps not for us

Someone else may suit you better if

  • You need work to start within a few weeks. Our workshop runs on a booked order, so a start is usually several weeks out.
  • Price is the deciding factor. We won't be the cheapest quotation you get, and we don't price-match.
  • You'd like the specification cut to meet a figure. We'll happily adjust a design and show what each change saves, but we keep the oak grade, the pegged joints and the glazing detail.
  • It's joinery, stairs, doors or windows. We pass these to local joiners we use on our own work.
  • It's repair or restoration of an old frame. That's specialist work we don't do.
  • The room will face away from the garden and be plastered and painted.A conventional extension will give you more for your money.
  • You want one firm to take a whole house through to the kitchen. We take a house to weathertight and work alongside your main contractor.

Either way, we'll tell you plainly on the first call.
