Worl by Foxtail Oak

What is Worl?

A circular oak gazebo whose roof spirals in to a round opening you can see the sky through. Made in our workshop in Abergavenny.

Look up

Why is there a hole in the roof?

Twenty years ago Josh stood under the Pantheon in Rome and looked up through the opening in its dome. He wanted to make that: a roof whose centre is open to the sky. Worl is how an oak frame does it.

Make it yours

What can you choose?

Pick one of each. When you press Enquire, your choices go into the form below, and we’ll come back with a price for that design.

1 · Size

The 3 m Worl is 3 m across the outside of the posts and 3.2 m tall. The roof overhangs the posts by 150 mm.

2 · Crown

3 · Roof

The roof covering and the crown are separate choices, so any covering can go with an open, clear or cowled crown. Glass is a whole roof in glass.

4 · How you buy it

The roof

How does the roof stand up?

Most roofs are carried by a ridge beam, a truss or a post. Worl’s roof is reciprocal. Each rafter rests on the one beside it, all the way round the ring, so the middle is left empty.

“It feels like it shouldn’t work.”

Origin

Where did it come from?

A customer asked us for a round oak structure to replace a round metal one. We had been thinking about reciprocal roofs for years with nowhere to use one. The customer changed his mind. By then we wanted to see it, so we built it anyway. It is the first reciprocal roof we have made.

Before you buy

What do I need to know?

How much does a Worl cost?

A 3 m Worl with a Corten steel roof and a clear plastic cover over the crown, supplied and installed on staddle stones, is £17,995 including VAT (about £14,996 plus VAT). Groundwork is not included, and travel is added by distance. A different size, roof, crown or way of buying changes the price, so choose yours above and we’ll give you a figure.

How long until it’s in my garden?

Six weeks from your deposit until it is made and ready to install.

How long are you on site?

One day to install, once the base is ready.

Do I need planning permission?

Often not, but it depends on the size and where it sits in your garden, so check with your council before you order.

What does it stand on?

Pads or a suitable slab. Your own groundworker can build it, or we can arrange it. If you buy supply only, we give you a base setting-out drawing.

Who puts it up?

We install it ourselves anywhere in the UK, with travel added by distance. Or we supply it to your own contractor. Either way, structural calculations by our consulting engineer are included.

How do I pay?

Half when you order, the other half before delivery or installation.
